Chelsea Manning Release Celebration

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 - 7:00pm
Veterans For Peace will host a celebration on the day Chelsea Manning is released from prison on May 17, her 35 year sentence commuted by President Obama in his last days in office.  The celebration will be at 7 pm at The New Freeway Hall in Rainier Valley (5018 Rainier Ave S.).  Veterans For Peace has marched in the last 6 Pride Parades in Seattle to raise awareness of Chelsea's incarceration and the unjust imprisonment for leaking war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Veterans For Peace believe Ms. Manning was a courageous whistle blower. Chelsea Manning, (formerly Bradley Manning) a transgender soldier provided Wikileaks with classified documents hoping to start a worldwide discussion and wanted people "to see the truth", after going through her chain of command to no avail.  Leaked documents, "Collateral Murder", Iraq War Logs", and"Afghan War Logs" showed human rights violations and war crimes.  Ms. Manning pled guilty to 10 offenses; the Army found her guilty of 20.

Seattle Veterans For Peace Chapter Condemn Trump’s Proposed Military Budget Increase

The Greater Seattle Chapter of Veterans For Peace condemns President Trump’s plan to increase military spending while cutting departments that take care of social, environmental and human needs.
Veterans For Peace has been critical of outsized military spending before this proposed increase, noting that the U. S. is the world’s only superpower.  Currently, the U.S. spends 54% of its discretionary budget on the military, already squeezing social programs that the working poor and the middle class depend on.

What is happening to our country when we spend enormous amounts of money on our military and pitifully little on human and social needs? In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr., “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.”
In reality, the U.S. should be reducing its military spending, not increasing it.  There is no threat of an invasion of our country.  VFP Board member Mike Dedrick comments, “The U.S. already spends more money on their military than the next 7 countries that include Russia and China.  We’re already the biggest and strongest military in the world.  This makes no sense.  And it won’t make us any safer.”

Instead of shoveling more money into the bottomless pit of more weapons of war, the U.S. should be doubling our efforts to make diplomacy, cooperation and negotiations our primary tools to get along with the rest of the world.  Afterall, Trump has bragged about his negotiation skills to get “good” and “better” deals.
Trump says we’re not winning wars and so the U.S. needs more military might (our armed forces are depleted).  Doesn’t that suggest that we try a new approach to problems and conflicts around the world?
VFP fears we will soon be in another war, and this time with one of the countries who is also a nuclear power.  As Albert Einstein said, “You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war.”
